Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables & Protein
- 2 (10-ounce) packages frozen broccoli spears
- 3 cups cooked turkey breast, sliced
Sauce
- ¼ cup butter
- 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 2 cups chicken broth
- ½ cup heavy whipping cream
- 3 tablespoons white wine
- ¼ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
Garnish
- Freshly chopped parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare Broccoli: Place frozen broccoli spears in a saucepan with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer until tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain broccoli thoroughly and set aside.
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) to warm up while you assemble the casserole.
- Make White Sauce Base: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in the flour, salt, and black pepper, mixing well to form a roux. Gradually pour in chicken broth, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens and bubbles, approximately 10 minutes.
- Add Cream and Wine: To the thickened sauce, stir in the heavy whipping cream and white wine until fully combined and smooth.
- Assemble – Layer 1: Spread the cooked broccoli evenly on the bottom of a 7×12-inch baking dish. Pour half of the prepared white sauce over the broccoli to coat it well.
- Assemble – Layer 2: Arrange the sliced turkey breast over the sauce layer in the casserole dish.
- Add Cheese Sauce: Stir the shredded Monterey Jack cheese into the remaining white sauce in the saucepan until melted and combined, then pour this cheese sauce evenly over the turkey layer.
- Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake until the casserole is bubbly, about 20 minutes.
- Broil for Golden Top: After baking, switch your oven to broil and broil the casserole for about 5 minutes or until the top cheese sauce is golden brown and slightly crisp.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven and sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the top before serving warm.
Notes
- Serve with garlic bread and a green salad for a complete meal.
- For a hearty one-dish meal, stir in cooked rice or noodles before baking.
- For extra texture, sprinkle buttered bread crumbs or crushed crackers on top before baking.
