Description

Golden-brown soft pretzel rings braided with creamy cheese, baked to perfection and sprinkled with coarse salt and herbs for a savory, chewy snack.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 4 cups water (for boiling)
  • 6 slices mozzarella or provolone cheese, cut into strips
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme or rosemary, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and brown sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in flour and salt until a soft dough forms. Knead for about 5–7 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes or until doubled.
  3. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Divide dough into 6 equal pieces. Roll each into a long rope, flatten slightly, and press cheese strips along the center. Pinch to seal and twist into a ring.
  5. In a large pot, bring 4 cups water and baking soda to a boil. Boil each ring for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared sheet.
  6. Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with coarse salt and herbs.
  7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden and puffed.
  8. Brush with melted butter if desired. Serve warm with dipping sauce or mustard.

Notes

  • Ensure cheese is well sealed in the dough to prevent leaks.
  • Try different cheeses like cheddar or gouda for variety.
  • These are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven.
