Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 cup warm milk (or half milk, half water)
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup canned tuna or cooked shredded chicken (optional)
  • 1/4 cup black olives, sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Dried oregano or thyme
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds or dried parsley

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Add warm milk and olive oil. Knead into a soft dough and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  4. Divide dough into 10 balls. Flatten each into a thick disk and place on the tray.
  5. Press the center of each bun to create a shallow well.
  6. Fill each well with tomato sauce, a sprinkle of cheese, chopped green bell pepper, red onion, optional tuna or chicken, and a sliced olive.
  7. Season with oregano, salt, and pepper.
  8. Brush the edges of the buns with beaten egg yolk and sprinkle with sesame seeds or dried parsley.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
  10. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • You can prepare the filling in advance to save time during assembly.
  • These buns can be frozen after baking and reheated for quick meals.
  • Experiment with different toppings like feta or sun-dried tomatoes for variety.
