Description
Crispy and golden French Toast Sticks made by dipping thick brioche bread strips in a rich batter and frying them to perfection. A delightful breakfast treat perfect for dipping in syrup or enjoying with your favorite toppings.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Batter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- ½ cup milk
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup cream
- 1 ½ tbsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For Frying
- 2 cups vegetable oil (or enough to fill a pot a few inches deep)
For Bread
- 1 loaf brioche bread, thick sliced (cut into 1–1½ inch sticks, crust optional)
Instructions
- Heat the Oil: Heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat on the stovetop to 350°F (175°C). You can alternatively use a deep fryer set to the same temperature for even frying.
- Prepare the Batter: In a shallow bowl, whisk together flour and milk until smooth. Add eggs, cream, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract, then whisk again until fully combined and smooth.
- Slice the Bread: Cut the brioche loaf into sticks about 1 to 1½ inches wide. Optionally, remove the crust if you prefer a softer edge.
- Dip and Fry: Dip each bread stick into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off. Carefully place the coated sticks into the hot oil, frying only a few at a time to avoid crowding the pot. Turn occasionally to ensure even golden brown cooking on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Drain and Serve: Once golden brown on both sides, remove the sticks with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite toppings such as syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.
Notes
- Maintain oil temperature at 350°F to ensure crispy and evenly cooked French toast sticks.
- Do not overcrowd the pan to avoid soggy bread and uneven frying.
- You can remove the crust before dipping if you prefer softer edges.
- Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
- Use brioche bread for a rich and tender texture, but other thick slices like challah or Texas toast can work.
