Bread
- 6 slices brioche or challah bread
Custard Mixture
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
Other
- Butter or cooking spray for greasing muffin tin
- Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or berries for serving
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Muffin Tin: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a standard muffin tin with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Form Bread Cups: Cut each slice of bread into quarters. Gently press 3 to 4 bread pieces into each muffin cup, forming a cup shape to hold the custard mixture.
- Mix Custard: In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Soak Bread Cups: Slowly pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cups in the muffin tin, allowing it to soak in thoroughly.
- Press Bread: Lightly press down the bread pieces to make sure they absorb the custard completely, forming a compact cup shape.
- Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 22 to 25 minutes, or until the cups are puffed, golden brown, and set in the center.
- Cool and Remove: Remove the muffin tin from the oven and allow the French toast cups to cool slightly before carefully removing them from the tins.
- Serve: Serve the French toast cups warm, topped with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries as desired.
Notes
- Using brioche or challah bread provides the best texture and flavor due to their rich, soft qualities.
- If desired, you can prepare the bread cups the night before and refrigerate the custard-soaked cups before baking.
- Adjust baking time slightly depending on your oven; watch for golden color and set centers.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute milk with almond or oat milk and use a suitable butter alternative for greasing.
- Adding a pinch of salt enhances the sweetness and flavor of the custard mixture.
