Description

A buttery shortcrust tart filled with tender spiced apple slices and topped with a golden oat crumble—served warm with vanilla ice cream, this cozy dessert brings all the flavors of classic apple pie in a rustic, sliceable form.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 23 tablespoons cold water
  • 3 medium apples, thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon flour (to thicken)
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. For the crust, pulse flour, sugar, and salt in a food processor. Add butter and pulse until crumbly. Add cold water slowly until dough comes together.
  3. Press the dough into a 9-inch tart pan. Chill for 15 minutes.
  4. Toss sliced apples with sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the chilled crust.
  5. In a bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter until crumbly.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the apples are tender.
  8. Cool slightly and serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Chilling the crust before baking helps it retain its shape.
  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for a more complex flavor.
  • You can prepare the crumble topping in advance and refrigerate.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla sauce as an alternative to ice cream.
