Description

Crispy Chicken Wonton Tacos are a delightful fusion dish featuring tender teriyaki-marinated chicken, crunchy fried wonton shells, and a fresh, tangy coleslaw, all topped with sweet chili sauce, sesame seeds, and cilantro. This recipe offers a perfect balance of savory, sweet, and crunchy elements in bite-sized tacos, making it an ideal appetizer or party snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Marinade

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil (divided)
  • 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated

Coleslaw

  • 2 cups coleslaw mix (cabbage and carrots)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame oil (remaining from divided tbsp)

Assembly

  • 12 wonton wrappers
  • Oil for frying (about 1 cup, for shallow frying)
  • 2 tbsp sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp chopped cilantro

Instructions

  1. Marinate Chicken: In a bowl, combine the sliced chicken breasts with teriyaki sauce, 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil, low-sodium soy sauce, minced garlic, and grated fresh ginger. Mix well to coat evenly and let it marinate for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
  2. Cook Chicken: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the marinated chicken slices until fully cooked and slightly caramelized, about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent burning. Once done, remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare Coleslaw: In a mixing bowl, toss together the coleslaw mix, thinly sliced green onions, rice vinegar, honey, and the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil. Mix thoroughly to combine the flavors and create a light, tangy slaw.
  4. Fry Wonton Wrappers: Heat oil in a shallow pan suitable for frying. Once hot, carefully place each wonton wrapper into the oil and fry for 20 to 30 seconds on each side or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  5. Assemble Tacos: Place the crispy wonton shells on a serving dish. Fill each with a portion of cooked chicken and top with a generous amount of prepared coleslaw. Drizzle each taco with sweet chili sauce for a sweet and spicy kick.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped cilantro over the assembled tacos for added flavor and a beautiful finish. Serve immediately while the wontons are crispy.

Notes

  • For a spicier twist, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to the marinade or chili sauce.
  • If you prefer baked wonton shells, brush wonton wrappers with oil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes until crispy.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to control saltiness in the dish.
  • Ensure chicken is thinly sliced for quick and even cooking.
  • Consume immediately to maintain the crispiness of wonton shells.
